Western Hunting Data Glossary
Below is a brief overview of the terms used in our datasets. For further information, feel free to contact us via email at contact@westernhuntingdata.com.
- GMU-game management unit
- Public Area-approx # of square miles of publicly accessible US Forest Service, BLM and state lands.
- Elk Density-elk per square mile averaged over the entire GMU. Higher is better
- Sex ratio-expressed as number of bucks or bulls per 100 cows or does. Higher is better.
- Public Pressure index-lower is better. Expressed as a percentage of # of males killed divided by the extrapolated number of bulls available on public land. Units above 100% must have a significant number of elk harvested on private land, inflating success rates.
- DAU % harvest-Colorado publishes populations for a Data Analysis Unit as a collection of several Game Management Units. This is the total number of bulls killed divided by the number of bulls available. Lower is better.
- Hunter density- assumes all hunters are on public land. Lower is better. Total number of hunters reduced by 25% for those assumed to have two tags.
- Game/hunter-assumes all hunters on public land and extrapolates elk density to public land. Higher is better.
- Average Deviation- the amount by which the success rate varies yearly. The lower the number, the more consistent and less affected by weather. Lower is better.
- Average Low- Average success rate minus average deviation. What to expect on a "down" year. Higher is better.
- Average High-Average success rate plus average deviation. What to expect on an "up" year. Higher is better.
